Time: 12 pm to 5:00 pm
Location: America’s Center
701 Convention Plaza
St. Louis, MO 63101
The 3rd Annual Gear Up Student & Parent Leadership Summit is a program designed by the US Department of Education and Administered by the National Council of Community Education Partners (NCCEP). It was created by President Bill Clinton. The goal is to increase the college going rate of low income students by enhancing their educational experience and actively involving the parents in the process (38% white, 33% Hispanic, 29% African-American). The University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis Community College system were selected to lead the 6 year partnership to implement programming for the St. Louis area. MBE is one of 14 Gear Up Community Partners of this project that is currently in its 3rd year.
The Gear Up Summit at MBE consists of a panel discussion (similar to the Hip Hop Summit) that includes celebrities and their parents. They discuss how the parental involvement made a difference on the celebrity’s educational process. They are joined in the discussion by qualified education representatives. Additionally the summit contains a college fair, and student and parent leadership workshops. All participating Gear Up Schools and district students are invited to attend (approximately 8000). We expect this while highlighting Missouri’s progressive African American population, promoting tourism and contributing to its community.
Designed to be a weekend of fun and entertainment for the whole family, the 17th Annual Missouri Black Expo Celebration Weekend will include two days of vibrant presentations to our community. This includes live music from local and nationally recognized R&B, Hip-Hop& Gospel Superstars. Community Outreach

The Missouri Black Expo Celebration Weekend seeks the support and participation of residents and business owners from various communities throughout the State Of Missouri. Because Missouri Black Expo Celebration Weekend has the potential of generating hundreds of thousands of dollars, MBE has created opportunities for businesses and organizations to benefit from our efforts to build alliances and contribute to our residents, thereby impacting our state’s economy.
MBE has designed an MBE Exhibit Affiliate program that will positively impact the fundraising efforts of schools, churches, non-profits & small businesses.
Each year MBE is actively engaged in the support of our educational efforts of our youth by implementing a program that encourages parental involvement in their child’s education called the Gear Up Student & Parent Leadership Summit. We also incorporate the youth each year on our main stage by showcasing their talents via live performances and expose them to the media and other professionals in an effort to further their careers.
Community Health Outreach is a staple of Missouri Black Expo Celebration Weekend in two areas:

• Via our Health Fair that provides over $1000 worth of medical services plus free back packs for the youth for all who participate.

• Via the Annual Prostate Cancer Survivor’s & Awareness Walk that was founded by Tom Bailey the President of Missouri Black Expo and implemented jointly by 100 Black Men of Metropolitan St. Louis and MBE. It provides free psa testing & education for all men 35 years of age and older in addition to donating 100% of registration funds for prostate cancer services to men who are underinsured or have no insurance.
