The
3rd Annual Gear Up Student & Parent Leadership
Summit is a program designed by the US Department
of Education and Administered by the National
Council of Community Education Partners (NCCEP).
It was created by President Bill Clinton. The
goal is to increase the college going rate of
low income students by enhancing their educational
experience and actively involving the parents
in the process (38% white, 33% Hispanic, 29%
African-American). The University of Missouri-St.
Louis and St. Louis Community College system
were selected to lead the 6 year partnership
to implement programming for the St. Louis area.
MBE is one of 14 Gear Up Community Partners
of this project that is currently in its 3rd
year.
The Gear Up Summit at MBE consists of a panel
discussion (similar to the Hip Hop Summit) that
includes celebrities and their parents. They
discuss how the parental involvement made a
difference on the celebrity’s educational
process. They are joined in the discussion by
qualified education representatives. Additionally
the summit contains a college fair, and student
and parent leadership workshops. All participating
Gear Up Schools and district students are invited
to attend (approximately 8000). This year’s
targeted class will be 10th grade students.
Listed are
some of the celebrities that have participated
in the Gear Up Summit along with their parent:

We also incorporate the youth each year on our
main stage by showcasing their talents via live
performances and expose them to the media and
other professionals in an effort to further
their careers.
